When considering a career change or ways to supplement your income, you should be curious about the income potential from the endeavor. Frequently I am asked, “how much does a college professor make?” However, the answer is not as simple or straightforward as it appears.
Today, two different types of professors have emerged, full-time and part-time, or adjunct, professors. Both of these types of professors are fully qualified to teach at the post-secondary level so their academic credentials are similar. There is no need to worry about taking a class from a professor who is not a regular staff-member. Often, adjuncts are better teachers than full-time faculty.
How Does Facebook Make Money
The amount of money a full-time professor can earn is highly variable. Factors such as faculty rank, region, and whether the institution is private or public play a role. The general range is between ,000.00 and ,000.00 per year. Often, full-time faculty are expected to conduct research, write grants, and bring in their own money. If they are not successful they are not retained.
Part-time professors are hired solely to teach courses on a semester-by-semester basis. Their time is not diluted with outside academic activities such as research, grant proposal preparation, student advising, curriculum development, or attending committee meetings. Thus, all of their time is available to teach. Adjuncts can expect to earn between ,500.00 to ,000.00 per course depending on the course and where it is taught.
Whereas full-time professors are limited to teaching a maximum of two or three extra courses per semester to supplement their income, part-timers have no limitations. If a university limits you to one or two courses in a semester, they have the right to obtain classes and teach them simultaneously at other institutions. Thus, an adjunct professor who is willing to work 40 to 50 hours per week can realistically earn over one-hundred thousand dollars per year. Also, by becoming affiliated with many universities, the loss of one school will not devastate the income stream. The school can be replaced. The idea is to not just generate an income stream, it is to protect it.
